I Found a Career that was Looking for Me!

Accurately translating your military skills to match what civilian employers are looking for can be difficult. Matt came to Still Serving Veterans looking for help landing a job that he would enjoy. Matt described Huntsville as a “very technically focused town” and had trouble tailoring his resume to highlight his technical skills. With assistance from our Veteran Career Counselors, Matt secured an interview that led to an ideal job.

Some of you may be able to relate to the challenge of actually getting an interview after service. We understand the value of networking, so we try to help our clients with this process. Matt explains that Ben McQuerry, SSV’s Veteran Career & Transition Services Manager for the Huntsville-National team, used his employer network to connect him with a company. “I knew that a company I had worked with several times in the past would be a perfect for Matt’s specific skillset.” After adjusting his resume and connecting via LinkedIn, Matt secured an interview, that led to an internship, that developed into a full-time position.

Matt enjoyed his military role of Infantry Assault Marine, which required intensive training and the use of advanced weaponry. He was matched with a job that allowed him to work with familiar equipment he had used during his military service. Using that information, his counselor identified a career where Matt’s military skills were exactly what his employer needed.
